Educational Profiling: Individual Response
Education profiling is a topic that is important to me because I see students being stereotyped in our schools based on the classes they chose. People need to understand that students in regular classes are not necessarily dumb or stupid. Being in a regular or AP class doesn’t define one’s intelligence. This problem exists because society emphasizes the importance of education and a student’s ability to achieve academic success. Society measures a student’s academic success by their ability to get into AP and honors classes. Students themselves get competitive and judge those whose intelligence is not on their level. For example, AP students and honors students might look down on students that are in regular classes because the regular students might not have high grades. Regular students might not like students that are in AP and honors classes because they are overachievers.
I believe our news report is an effective way to address the issue. Our news report draws attention to the issue and draws awareness to the discrimination that occurs in schools. Discrimination is not limited to students, teachers also treat their students differently. In the project, I appeared in the video and played the role of a student. I was an ESL student, an AP student, and a regular student. The different roles that I play are used to make a comparison between the behavior and attitude of a regular student and an AP student. In the video, I play an AP student that values education and learning. I also play an ESL and regular student that has a strong disdain for AP students. I also contributed to the writing of the group paper and planned out the scenes for our video.
1) I like that in the video, your group used understatement to show that the achievements of non-honors/non-AP students are often considered less valuable. Even though the character you played in the video had an average of 98% in non-honors Pre-calculus class, the teacher claimed that the student was not as smart as the AP students. Personally, I think that a 98% in a math class is impressive regardless of whether it's honors or not.
ReplyDelete2) I like that your video included everyone's perspectives. I never really thought about how non honors/ non AP students felt about honors/AP students. I also really like that your topic was educational profiling. I thought it was original and creative.
1) I liked the parody your group used to highlight the standards of AP and regular students. The mocking of how a “jealous” or a “dumber” student would act shows what people assume a regular student to be. Even though it is not true, it brings attention to the issue.
ReplyDelete2) I liked your acting and emotions you out into it. You were confident in your acting and spoke well. This made the video comprehensible and your acting made it enjoyable.
1) I liked your group's use of invective throughout the video to highlight an underlying "tension" between different students in the education system. The way the regular students mocked an AP student demonstrates the issue of assumptions and expectations. Believing that a regular student is less capable than an AP student is wrong and unjustified.
ReplyDelete2) Your video was original and very creative. The topic of your video, educational profiling, is one that is not normally presented in the way that you did, as people tend to look past this issue. Your acting and the way you articulated your words made the purpose and the satirical target more apparent.
1) I liked how your group used exaggeration to highlight the faults between the different types of people at school as the AP people had ridiculous APs like AP lunch and the regular kids hating the AP kids
ReplyDelete2)I like how the video provided examples of your satirical target and how it used satirical devices to highlight the flaws in school like favoritism in teachers and etc.
1) I liked that your groups used parody in the video when the AP student was asked about his classes. I thought that the response of "AP Lunch and 2 free AP periods" was funny which helped show the audience the extreme schedule of an AP student and its faults.
ReplyDelete2) I thought that your video overall was very clear and humorous to watch. It clearly stated the problems in the education system in and entertaining way.
